Once you arrive in Germany , you will notice that the German public transportation system very efficient and cost effective. There are many options and for the most part, you can get anywhere any time. Keep in mind that you can purchase a train ticket from your current location to your destination and this ticket is valid for the train, bus and street car. ie. Take a train from Darmstadt to Hanau then use the same ticket for a bus from Hanau to Frankfurt .

Taxi Cab
Taxi cabs can be found around any airport or public location. If you walk up to a taxi parking area and there is a row of taxi cabs, go to the front vehicle first. The price varies but can be expensive at times. The weekend taxi fees are generally more expensive than the fees on a weekday. If you can avoid using a taxi cab I would recommend it. If you are relatively pleased with the service provided by the cab driver a one or two EUR tip would be sufficient.

Street Cars (Trolley)
Street cars were the first mode of public transportation in Germany .

Street cars make frequent stops and have a map layout of each stop. Check the route and be sure the stop you want is close enough to your destination. If not you may want to take the U/S Bahn, a bus or a taxi. Street cars are relatively fast and you should reach your destination quickly.

Train
The European rail system is set up to be a very cost effective and efficient means for international European travel. With a vast number of inner-city trains running constantly during the day, the German train system is just as effective. When entering a train station (Bahnhof) you will need to purchase a ticket from the machine. You can only buy a train ticket with EUR but you can use any denomination below 20 including coins or bills. Simply select your destination from the list shown, enter the destination number and push the ‘Einzelfahrt' button. Your change will fall along with your ticket to the tray. If you are planning to travel by train from Frankfurt to Paris , for example, you may choose to use the ICE train. This train is designed to get you from point A to point B much faster than a normal train. ICE trains are a little more expensive but may be the smart way to travel if you are planning inter-country travel in Europe .

U/S-Bahn
The U or S Bahn would be the equivalent to the subway in the States. The U-Bahn covers city areas where as the S-Bahn covers city areas and up to 60 kilometers outside the city. Normally you will only find U/S Bahns in bigger cities. The U/S Bahn normally makes more stops than trolleys making them the smarter choice for inner city travel.

You can also purchase an all day ticket which is good for trolleys, buses and the U/S-Bahn by pressing the Tageskarte button instead of the Einzelfahrt button. It is possible to board the train or trolley without purchasing a ticket but you will be fined 60 EUR minimum and these checks do occur regularly. You buy train tickets online from the official homepage of Deutsche Bahn at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Berlin brings to one's mind, the Great Divide (or wall) that split the city into two different political entities. However, the newly rejuvenated and reunited Berlin is marching into the future, post millennium. It is casting itself in the light of a new and modern city of Continental Europe .

Berlin 's dark past as Hitler's capital of Nazi atrocities, and as the capital of Cold War in the later years, has not escaped the psyche of the local population or the visitors. Popular opinion is that Berliners do not know where they are going, but know their past, and do not want to go back there. After being completely annihilated in the WW II bombings, Berlin has since rebuilt itself as a modern structure of glass and steel.

The scars still remain, mostly as a tourist attraction. For example the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church displays the shell of the bell tower that remains, in striking contrast to the modern church constructed to the west, fondly nicknamed “lipstick and powderbox" because of the design.

The contrast between East and West Berlin before the wall fell is still evident since East Berlin proud of its cultural heritage rebuilt its museums and churches whereas West Berlin built new museums and theatres.

East and West are still coming together to form a whole Berlin and the process will take its time.

Berlin , being the new German capital is living up to its reputation as the dynamic hub of continental Europe , with nightlife at its most exciting and wild. The city after accommodating the German Government as the seat of the new capital has undergone a major facelift with new streets, skyscrapers and rail lines at a whopping cost of more than $100 billion. Most of this has gone into the central district (Mitte) which houses glittering luxury hotels and shopping arcades. The effort in restoration of Unter den Linden to its pre war glory and Hotel Adlon, the most famous hotel in pre war Germany and Europe has been notable.

The chic district of boutiques and cafes, the Prenzlauer Berg, was not too damaged by WW II bombings and restoration of this area has been relatively easier. This flurry of restoration and activity has caused a spiraling effect in the real estate market with sharp increase in prices as well inconveniences of living around construction sites for Berliners. Most famous buildings of Berlin have been restored in this process. Reichstag now has a new glass dome topped with the Eagle (national symbol) replacing the old imperial hunter.

The Oranienburger Strasse Synagogue (also known as Neue Synagoge Berlin-Centrum Judaicum/The New Synagogue), bombed beyond repair by Allied bombers, has been restored to its old splendor. Likewise, Berlin Cathedral and the five state museums on Museum Island have been restored to their original glory. The natural beauty of Berlin has been enhanced with the few gardens and farms covering about 1/3rd of the total area, which further beautifies the city.

The Berlin Tourist Information Center , Europa Center handles all information regarding Berlin in general and Hotel bookings. The best and easier way to access the information is from the site www.berlin-tourism.de.

Have you been thinking about traveling in Europe? Don't' forget to include river travel in the various options that you should look at. Not doing so would be a shame, as you would be missing out on one of the most pleasant and surprising ways to discover the continent.

River travel is probably one of the most comfortable and stylish ways to travel, and going on a river cruise in Europe will be the experience of a lifetime for you, whether you go alone, with one or more friends, with your significant other, or decide to go with members of your family.

On a river trip you have access to inland areas of countries that big ships just can't get to, and you get to sail along serene waterways, rather than to drive along congested highways. Your comfortable hotel travels with you and you usually moor very centrally in most towns that you will visit.

It is true that ships for European river travel are smaller than ocean liners, but most are very comfortable and quite roomy, and there are several that have a movie rooms and fully equipped restaurants, as well as a dancing area. Plus, of course, viewing areas to look at the lovely landscape around you.

Before looking at the boating companies that you may want to book your trip with, it would make sense to decide on the length of your voyage, as well as on the location that interests you and on the number of amenities that you would expect to come with your package.

As for the length, you can find anything from three days cruised to break up a longer holiday to leisurely four-week trips down major rivers such as the Danube. One or two weeks are pretty standard lengths.

As for the location, trips tend to concentrate on the bigger rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube and the Seine, but there are also lesser-known alternatives, such as the tributaries of the Elbe in Germany, the Po in the north of Italy, or the rivers of Poland and European Russia.

Another crucial thing to consider is the season of the trip. The south of France or the flower-growing areas of Holland are great for a late spring or summer trip, for instance.

Trips in Germany are great in the winter months, especially if you like a traditional Christmas atmosphere and homely cooking and baking.

Concerning the level of comfort, you will find that there are a great number of alternatives, from Spartan drive-your-own houseboat hires to luxury cruise ships that have a lot in common with high-end hotels, but that retains an individual character.
